Camden Hills field hockey collects season-opening win in overtime

ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills varsity field hockey team opened its season with a nail-biting overtime victory against Lewiston on Thursday, Sept. 5 in Rockport.

After completing the regulation period knotted 2-2, the Windjammers were able to walk away with a 3-2 victory thanks to Lulu Lydon’s goal, which was assisted by Ani Reinwand.

With the victory, Camden Hills begins the season with a 1-0 record.

Camden Hills recorded 14 shots on goal, four penalty corners and eight goalie saves.

Lewiston recorded 10 shots on goal, nine penalty corners and 11 goalie saves.

Scoring for Camden Hills were Claudine Webber (assisted by Molly Shook, 14:27, first half), Lydon (penalty corner, assisted by Sophia Campbell, 8:50, second half) and Lydon (assisted by Reinwand, 2:39, overtime).

Scoring for Lewiston were Charlotte Castronguay (assisted by Emma Begin, 6:09, first half) and Begin (assisted by Castronguay, 16:12, second half).

“Claudine Webber and Molly Shook were huge contributors to the game today,” said Camden Hills head coach Lindsey Clement. “The two rookie freshmen took control of the game after a time out; their play was truly the catalyst for our team's momentum.”

Sophia Campbell, meanwhile, controlled the game for the Windjammers, according to Clement.

“Without question, the team's success today came from her hustle, positioning, and leadership on the field,” said Clement. “There wasn't a player today that gave more effort on the field.”

Though the Windjammers struggled, according to Clement, to get good transitions from their defensive end today, Greta Bishop assisted by finding a series of successful passing transitions.

“Greta's been working hard to find those offensive passes to catch opponent's shorthanded, and today it showed,” said Clement. “Every successful passing transition we had today, Greta was a part of.”

Lydon, once again, is taking control of the scoreboard, Clement noted. Lydon contributed to 78 percent of the Camden Hills goals last season via scoring or assisting and is proving to be a formidable attacker once again, Clement said.

“She's relentless in the circle, and that is exactly what we needed in [overtime],” Clement stated. “[A]fter her team got the ball down the field, she was unwilling to accept anything less than the back of the cage.”

The Windjammers will host Edward Little for its next contest Saturday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. in Rockport.
