Brewer edges Oceanside for its first win of baseball season

ROCKLAND — The Oceanside varsity baseball squad hosted Brewer at Morrill Field in Rockland for its fourth game of the season Saturday, May 1. 

The host Mariners (1-3) fought hard but were ultimately edged by the visitors 5-4 in what was the first victory of the season for Brewer (1-3). 

Brewer plated two runs in the opening inning and three runs in the second while recording five hits and no errors. The Witches left nine runners on base. 

Oceanside tallied two runs in each the first and third innings while recording six hits and committing one error. The Mariners stranded eight runners on base. 

Anthony Chiappone captained the Brewer offense with a pair of home runs, one in the first inning with a man on base and another in the second inning with two runners on. 

Nathan Coombs (single, two-run home run) and Finnegan Lynch (two singles) led the Oceanside offense. 

Working the mound for Oceanside were Duncan Oakes-Nelsen and Nathaniel Barnard. 

Pitching for Brewer were Maddox Torrey and Jed Gilpatrick. 

Oceanside will, hopefully, play its next contest Tuesday, May 4 on the road in Waldoboro against Medomak Valley at 4 p.m. The contest has already been postponed twice this season.
