Belfast baseball edges Oceanside in nail-biter

BELFAST — The Oceanside varsity baseball squad hit the road Wednesday, May 12 to challenge Belfast, and found itself edged out by the host Lions in a nail-biting thriller. 

With the loss, the visiting Mariners fall to 2-7 on the season. The Lions, meanwhile, improve its record to 5-2. 

Oceanside’s lone run came in the sixth inning while Belfast plated a trio of runs in the sixth. 

Belfast tallied four hits, committed one error and left three runners on base. 

Oceanside recorded five hits, committed no errors and stranded nine runners on base. 

Leading at the plate for Oceanside were Nathan Coombs (two singles) an Connor Calderwood (two singles, RBI). 

Tommy Walker notched a double for Belfast, while Chris Kelley tallied a three-run home-run. 

Working the pitcher’s mound for Belfast were Kelley (nine strikeouts, five walks, one hit-by-pitch) and Walker, while Austin Chilles (nine strikeouts, two walks) pitched for Oceanside. 

The next game for Oceanside will be Friday, May 14 on the road against Medomak Valley at 4 p.m.

The next game for Belfast will be Friday, May 14 at home against Mount View at 4 p.m.
