Avrum Weiss, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Avrum Weiss, age 72, of Vinalhaven, Maine, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 5, 2026.
Born in Manhattan, New York, August 29, 1953, Avrum grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. His mother liked to remind him that the day he was born was the hottest day of the year—fitting weather for someone who would go on to live life with such intensity and passion.
As a licensed clinical psychologist for forty years in Georgia and Maine, and having trained and supervised more than one hundred therapists, Avrum helped change the course of countless lives for the better. He was known for his groundbreaking thought leadership on the psychology of men and for helping fellow clinicians become more skillful, compassionate therapists for male clients. Avrum authored or co-authored four books and was a frequent contributor to Psychology Today. He held a B.A. from Goddard College and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Georgia State University.
Avrum’s proudest accomplishment was as father to two extraordinary children and as “Silly Grandpa" to three grandchildren he described himself as "head over heels in love with." Avrum married Dr. Michelle Tullier in 2015, and they shared a life of joy and adventure, first in Atlanta and then on Vinalhaven island in Maine. They filled their life with extended sailing trips, hosting dear friends, summer outdoor movies in their yard, and the weekly neighborhood “pizza night,” as well as idyllic, quiet nights by the fire.
Avrum was a lifelong, avid sailor who learned gardening, woodworking, and cooking in later years. He was a devoted dog lover who had a canine companion nearly every day of his life, most recently his and Michelle’s beloved rescue Diva who pre-deceased him in February 2026. Avrum loved books, deep conversation, and music, finding all that as a member of the men’s book group on Vinalhaven and with the sea shanty singing group he founded.
Avrum is survived by his daughter Sarra Weiss of Asheville, NC; son Micah Weiss, daughter-in-law Nomi Teutsch, grandsons Eyal and Nadav, and granddaughter Noa of Philadelphia; sister Rachel Weiss of Kingston, NY; sister Ariel Weiss of Philadelphia and niece Emma Weiss Holyst of Durham, NC; wife Michelle of Vinalhaven and stepdaughter Alexandra Gazelle of Atlanta; and ex-wife Gayanne Geurin of Atlanta.
The family extends special appreciation to caregivers Jill Barnes, Farrah Swears, and Mary Grace Wadsworth; medical provider (and Avrum’s sailing buddy) Jim Hogan and all the staff of the Islands Community Medical Center on Vinalhaven; the compassionate team of MaineHealth Home Health and Hospice Care; and the many friends from near and far who have tirelessly offered comfort, love, and practical support. Michelle extends special thanks to the Dempsey Center of Maine for the resources that have supported her as a caregiver and for Maine Death with Dignity, which enabled Avrum to end his six-month experience with glioblastoma on his own terms.
After a graveside service for immediate family in Rockland, Maine, on July 7, 2026, Avrum will be honored with memorial services at Union Church in Vinalhaven on July 25, and at Congregation Bet Haverim in Atlanta in early August.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Islands Community Medical Services (https://www.icmsvh.org/donate) or Pope Memorial Humane Society (https://www.popehumane.org/give-now/).
