Ann E. Mitchell, obituary
MATINICUS and ROCKLAND — Ann E. Mitchell, 78, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, following 30 year battle with Lupus.
Born in Portland, February 23, 1947, she was the daughter of Vernon Wilbert ‘Bill’ and Joyce O’Brien Everett. Graduating from Falmouth High School, Ann attended Mercy Hospital Nursing School. There she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse and began her nursing career. Later Ann began working for the South Portland Nursing Home. For over 13 years she cared for residents there.
On April 5, 1969, Ann married the love of her life, John Mitchell, in Falmouth. Together they made their home in the Portland area. For 33 years, Ann and John owned and operated a boarding home for the elderly in Westbrook.
Retiring to the Midcoast, Ann enjoyed spending six months a year on Matinicus Island and the other six on the mainland. There she found joy in beach combing, spending time near the water and decorating her home and cottage with mermaid themes. In quiet moments she enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Ann’s number one priority was her family. Spending time with them kept her going in some of her darkest times.
She loved to cook for them and was famous for her original casserole and chowder recipes. Her family said whatever she cooked was delicious.
Predeceased by one grandson; Ann is survived by her husband, John Mitchell, of Matinicus; her children, Gregory Mitchell and his wife Shoshanna of Ithica, New York, Sarah Getchell and her husband Lenny of Edgecomb, Geoffrey Mitchell and his partner Karen Jalbert of Freeport; her sister, Susan Swan and her husband Scott of New Glocester; a special friend, Blair Clement of Camden; 9 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and too many friends to count.
In keeping with her wishes, Ann’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.
