On the dock at Toast Gourmet Coffee and Provisions
A new coffee shop called Toast Gourmet Coffee and Provisions opened this summer and plans to stay open until the last sailboats leave Maine's harbor for the season.
At Wayfarer Marine, 59 Sea Street, Camden, it sits right at the water's edge. We checked in with owner Stephanie Shershow on what it's all about.
Five things to know about Toast:
1: Can you really have a hearty breakfast with just toast?
Oh yeah! This is like a beautiful toast meal! I often get orders for a takeaway lunch. First, the bread is made in Newburg at Pebblestone Farm specifically for Toast. It is cut in thick slices, toasted and topped with delicious local ingredients, such as goat cheese from Sunset Acres (which comes in herbal garlic, maple, and orange-cranberry flavors), Ducktrap smoked salmon, Tournesol veggie pate (made locally), micro-greens, local organic tomatoes, avocados, jams, and Spruce Mountain Blueberry chutney. Then we can add other things, such as fresh organic fruit and Nuttella, peanut butter and jelly, prosciutto and local hard boiled eggs topped with balsamic glaze and Fiore butternut squash olive oil... it’s to die for. There’s often a side of nuts or blueberries to go with the toast. You won’t be hungry. And if you need something sweet, we have cinnamon rolls, dense chocolate brownies, yummy muffins, and croissants.
2. Can anyone go in there, or will a bunch of boat people be giving me the side eye?
Ha Ha! People always ask “you mean it's not just for sailors and boat people?” No way. There are photographers, people stopping by after a work out at High Mountain Hall, locals from across the street, guys and gals that repair boats, people from away as far as Equador and Paris as well as Ohio and New Jersey! The atmosphere was designed to honor where we are (meaning right on the water next to boats) and also have a warm friendly atmosphere and gourmet-style delicacies.
3. What is the correct pronunciation of the bread, Challah? Will people get points for saying it right?
You gotta say it like “Hallah” only you have to get a little phlegmy in the back of your throat if you want to try to say it the old-school Hebrew way. (I’m Jewish.) It’s a sweet, egg-based Jewish bread that used to be used mostly for Sabbath and holidays, but now is enjoyed all the time. And yeah, sure I’ll give you points for saying it right, but you have to throw your hands up in the air and say “HOLLAHHHHHH” and do a little dance, too.
4. Do you have WiFi?
Absolutely. You just have to bribe me to get the password… just kidding. Yeah. Free Internet, so you can check out Killer Convo while drinking your iced decaf soy milk latte. Or, you can listen to the Yentes brothers (that’s what I’ve got on the sound system, right now). Or you can take your toast outside and listen to the sounds of the harbor, the sailors working on the schooners or enjoy the quiet company of someone special. There are definitely interesting characters that stop by… who knows? You may meet someone new!
5. As for your gourmet coffee, which one goes best with Challah?
You can pair it with your favorite espresso coffee drink (the coffee is roasted at Green Tree right in Lincolnville), chai latte, tea, or fresh-squeezed lemonade. But, I have to say I think I have the best iced coffee around. And that goes with everything as far as I’m concerned. Sometimes I even have my iced coffee with coconut milk and just a dab of half and half with agave nectar. Now that is a real treat!
