Carver Hill Gallery, 36 Bay View Street in Camden, opens its 2026 Camden Art Walk season with a new group exhibition titled "Water". The show will open on Third Thursday, May 21, from 4 - 7 p.m. The public is invited and welcome. Refreshments and snacks will be served and the event is free.
This exhibition presents a curated blend of photography, painting, and sculpture, exploring the multifaceted nature of water and how humans interact with it. The featured works are responses to this changing seascape, from haunting and dramatic to serene.
The show features work by Emily Freeman, Jim Westphalen, Whitney River, Angela Warren, Evan McGlinn, Kate Kern Mundie, Theresa Girard, Philip Frey, Traci Harmon-Hay, Angela Warren. Several of the exhibiting artists will be present and the show includes both literal and abstract representations of the theme, according to the Gallery, in a news release.
"The show is a reverent display of this fundamental biological attribute that we all share, and of our identity as a coastal community," said the Gallery.
Carver Hill describes the show's representation of three ideas: "in our most basic form, we are mostly water. There is an evolutionary draw to water for survival and development. When in its presence, a “blue mind” state of calm can be experienced. The ocean activates all five senses simultaneously and numerous studies have shown it lowers cortisol levels. The visual experience and sound of waves breaking, the cool feeling of water on the skin, and the taste and smell of salt stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and induce deep relaxation."
The Maine coast has been attracting creatives and those seeking solace for centuries.
"Maine's seascape is a muse and a mirror for the gorgeous sky and light Maine is known for," said the news release. "Additionally, her many terrestrial bodies of water in the Maine woods are stunning in all four seasons."
Dr. Masaru Emoto, from his book Hidden Messages in Water, says “Water records information, and while circulating throughout the earth distributes information. This water sent from the universe is full of the information of life...” Artists describe their desire to paint this information - to try and create works that transcend a visual representation of the landscape by whispering interpretations of these messages.
Show runs through June 14, 2026.
The gallery is open 7 days a week - Mon. - Sat. 11 - 5 and Sun. 11 - 4
