UPDATED: Two injured, one killed in Belfast two-vehicle accident
BELFAST — Two drivers were injured and a passenger in one car was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Route 3 Feb. 14, according to Belfast Police Sergeant Daniel Fitzpatrick.
The two cars were traveling in heavy snow and slippery conditions around 1:36 p.m. when the driver of a westbound silver Volvo reportedly lost control and fishtailed into the oncoming lane, where it was struck by an oncoming blue Honda.
The Volvo, under operation of Shana Harriman, 32, of Montville, was struck on the passenger side of the vehicle, leading to the death of the passenger, Billy Jo Sherman, 38, of Liberty.
Terri Curtis, 61, of Belmont, has been identified as the driver of the Honda. Both Curtis and Harriman suffered serious injuries in the crash, police said.
Both drivers were transported to Waldo County General Hospital, with both transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center via ambulance.
The conditions of the drivers are not known.
Fitzpatrick said a Waldo County Sheriff’s deputy was first to happen upon the scene almost immediately after the accident occurred. Other agencies that responded to the scene were Belfast Police, Belfast Ambulance, and the Belfast Fire Department.
The accident occurred near the Belfast Curling Club, and Fitzpatrick said bystanders tried to assist at the scene.
Route 3 was closed for roughly two hours after the accident before being reopened for travel.
Officer Travis Spencer, of the Belfast Police Department, is the officers investigating the crash, with the investigation ongoing.
