Arthritis is fundamentally a condition of painful, swollen and inflamed joints. Chronic discomfort and reduced mobility translate to a more or less constant hit to quality of life.
Medical research conducted on the potential of hyperbaric oxygen - a broadly anti-inflammatory therapy that improves oxygenation and circulation throughout the body - has supported its usefulness in halting progression of arthritis and improving symptoms including pain in a number of studies to date.
Here is a brief summary of some of the relevant studies on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in arthritis.
-
A study of three rheumatoid arthritis patients concluded that all three “reported significant but unanticipated improvement in RA-related pain, increased activity and improved sleeping patterns.”¹
-
A study of nine rheumatoid arthritis patients found that “nine of nine patients demonstrated no radiologic progression of erosions, synovitis, or bone marrow edema at three- and six-month scans.”²
-
A study of 10 rheumatoid arthritis patients demonstrated “statistically significant decreases in pain as measured by the Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3 and Pain and Sleep Quality Questionnaire were observed.”³
-
A study of a rodent model of arthritis noted that “hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly reduced both joint inflammation and hyperalgesia [pain sensitivity]. As compared with aspirin treatment, hyperbaric treatment was equally as effective in decreasing joint inflammation and hyperalgesia.”⁴
-
A similar study of rodents remarked on a reduction in swelling, and it⁵ and other animal studies have reached similar conclusions that HBOT broadly improves inflammatory immune markers in arthritis.⁶⁷⁸
Camden Hyperbaric is pleased to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy to the Midcoast Community.
In addition, we offer molecular hydrogen therapy, which also has support in medical research for reductions in rheumatic disease activity.
