ROCKLAND — A construction worker has been flown to a trauma center after being pinned under the roof of a car port Saturday morning in Rockland.

As Rockland Fire, EMS, and Police worked to free the man from beneath the collapsed structure, emotions were extremely fragile among the bystanders who, moments earlier, had heared a loud boom coming from 52 Crescent Street, June 4, 2022.

At the time of the incident, the car port was being demolished by a small building business. While responders were still en route to the scene, on-site workers making the initial 9-1-1 call reported that a coworker was trapped underneath a garage, according to Rockland Fire Chief Chris Whytock, in a news release. Initial reports were that the man was still conscious and alert, but by the time the first Rockland Police Officer arrived at 8:25 a.m., the patient was no longer conscious.

Firefighters raised one corner of the structure using their Paratech Airbag System to lift the weight of the roof off the patient to gain access to his location. They also called upon the assistance of Jake Barbour Inc, who made himself and his earthmoving equipment available.

“Our personnel were able to lift and stabilize the structure in order to retrieve the victim and began emergency life saving measures,” said Whytock.

The victim was ultimately transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center. At this time, no further update on the patient’s condition has been available.

Whytock credits the construction workers for their quick notification to the Knox County Regional Communications Center. Their quick action “helped get our on duty personnel on scene quickly and supplemented with our off duty and Call Division personnel.”

Eight RFD personnel responded to the scene (both on and off duty personnel), another five responded from home to cover the city.
