Tray Wellington Band brings jazz, blues, bluegrass to Strand Theatre
Banjo player Tray Wellington and his band will bring a mix of jazz, blues and bluegrass to the Strand Theatre stage, Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
Tray Wellington’s approach to the quintessential American instrument is all about looking forward.
"An International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Award winner, Wellington is critically acclaimed not only for his technical prowess, but also for expressing his unique point of view to craft a one-of-a-kind voice on the instrument. He’s an artist that’s unconcerned with tradition," said the Strand.
Tray Wellington, from Ashe County in western North Carolina, was captivated by the banjo during his early teenage years. Together with a group of friends, he formed Cane Mill Road, a band that swiftly gained acclaim for their dynamic mix of bluegrass. Cane Mill Road released three highly regarded albums, collaborated with renowned artists like Jim Lauderdale, and graced the stages of prestigious festivals in the United States, including Grey Fox, Merlefest, and the IBMA’s Wide Open Bluegrass. Wellington’s exceptional talent was duly recognized, earning him the title of IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year and contributing to Cane Mill Road’s accolades as the 2019 IBMA Momentum Band of the Year.
Wellington then embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut EP, Uncaged Thoughts, and assuming roles as an educator and performer at events like Merlefest and Grey Fox. In 2020, he unveiled the Tray Wellington Band, debuting at the IBMA’s virtual World of Bluegrass.
