Three injured after golf cart goes astray in Port Clyde
PORT CLYDE — Three people were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center after a golf cart left a driveway in Port Clyde and overturned on a grassy area.
At approximately 5:40 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, Knox Regional Communications Center received multiple calls alerting them to the incident near 6 Cold Storage Road, in Port Clyde (a village of St. George). Many people were in the area at the time, taking advantage of a beautiful late summer evening by patronizing Linda Bean’s food truck and Dip Net Restaurant on one side, as well as a gathering at The Barn Café, next to the grassy area.
“Knox deputies conducted a thorough investigation into the incident and determined that the golf cart operator made an operating error,” said Knox County Sheriff Patrick Polky. “The cart lunged forward, striking a dining table and several bystanders, and came to rest, pinning one of the bystanders underneath.”
The operator and passenger of the cart were treated on the scene.
The three injured were each transported to the hospital by St. George, South Thomaston, and Thomaston ambulances for non life-threatening injuries. Because of the number of patients involved, the fire department sent out an inter-department all-hands request for manpower, which brought an estimated 10 firefighters to the scene, though more would have been helpful, according to Asst. Fire Chief Chris Leavitt.
While Leavitt and his crew worked to tend to the patients while attempting to create some order in the chaos that they encountered, Knox County Sheriff’s deputies set to work interviewing witnesses.
