Thomaston Riverview Park designs to be unveiled at meeting, Nov. 10
Join the Thomaston Select Board, the Ad Hoc Thomaston Riverview Park Committee, the Thomaston Conservation Commission, and Rasor Landscape Architecture in the town office building, Monday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m., in the Town Office Building, for an hour-long introduction to the finished landscape-and-amenities design for Thomaston Riverview Park (formerly Thomaston Green Park).
At the town meeting of June 14, 2023, Thomaston citizens voted to establish, in perpetuity, an 11-acre park on the former Maine State Prison property.
"Since removal of the prison complex two decades ago, the Park has become a prized community asset with its spacious grounds and expansive views of the St. George River," said Town Manager Kara George.
Improvements over the past dozen years have included pathways, tree-lined allées, a gazebo, granite benches, historical placards, and a youth soccer pitch.
In August 2023, the Thomaston Select Board established an Ad Hoc Committee of town volunteers to make recommendations for enhancing this high-value community open space. The committee delivered its recommendations to the Select Board in August 2024, and the Town then hired Rasor Landscape Architecture to transform that vision into a comprehensive design. Additionally, after conducting online and ballot-box surveys in the spring and summer of this year, the Ad Hoc Committee recommended to the Select Board the name of Thomaston Riverview Park, and the board formally adopted that name.
Since Thomaston Riverview Park is the centerpiece of the Town’s interconnected network of parks and trails, according to George, Rasor Landscape Design was also tasked with suggesting improvements to village trail segments along residential streets, and those suggestions will also be shared at the November 10 meeting.
"Join us if you can," said George.
The meeting will also be streamed online for real-time or later viewing.
