Susan Hawley explores abstraction, emotional renewal in 'Empty/Full' exhibit
Event Date
Friday, October 30, 2026 - 04:00 pm to 07:00 pm
WALDOBORO — "Empty / Full", a solo exhibition of paintings by Susan Hawley, is on view at Gravedigger's Daughter through November 16, 2026.
In "Empty / Full", Hawley explores the expressive possibilities of abstraction through playful experimentation with ink and acrylic on watercolor paper.
"Her compositions combine sweeping gestures, fluid lines, and layered color, balancing spontaneity with restraint," said Gravedigger's Daughter, in a news release. "The paintings mark a departure from earlier work rooted in history, geography, and personal identity, allowing gesture and intuition to take precedence over narrative.
As Hawley explains, "These abstractions come from me taking a breath, a letting go of commentary about our common present."
The title reflects the emotional tension between emptiness and fullness, suggesting the restorative possibilities of creative expression, according to the news release.
Hawley is a painter based in Northampton, Massachusetts. Her work has been widely exhibited, including Gravedigger’s Daughter and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and she has held artist residencies at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico, and the Michael Karolyi Foundation in Vence, France.
An opening reception will be held Friday, Oct. 30, from 4 - 7 p.m.
Gallery hours are Fridays, 2–6 p.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.; and by appointment.
