RSU 13 Superintendent letter prepares families, staff for Dec. 1 return to classes
In a letter to RSU 13 families and staff, sent out Sunday, November 30, 2025 through the RSU 13 website and social media platforms, Superintendent John McDonald shared some answers regarding the first day back to school following a November 21, 2025 fatality. Significantly, Bus 9 has been decommissioned, and a substitute driver is behind the wheel; the bus route itself remains the same.
Staff members will be riding the school buses on December 1, while counselors remain on hand for grieving and confused students and staff.

November 30, 2025
Dear Families and Staff,
As we look to welcome students back tomorrow, December 1st, we anticipate you may have questions about some of the supports and next steps that we have in place.
We will continue to have increased counseling available for students and staff by welcoming back some of our partners that supported us last week, particularly at the middle school and South School. Children taking the bus in the morning will be greeted by their driver and a volunteer staff member who will ride along for the morning bus run.
Bus 9 has been decommissioned. The bus taking that route will be Bus 3 and will have a substitute driver. The route will remain the same. We will have multiple counselors available on that bus tomorrow morning. We have been working with the Department of Education on a plan to have a replacement bus in our fleet up and running soon, and we appreciate their quick response in supporting us in this effort.
We would like to again express our appreciation for the caring community partners who have offered their remarkable support. We remain deeply thankful for the strength of our Midcoast community.
With Care,
John McDonald
Superintendent of Schools
