The Points North Institute has announced the launch of its third season at their Shotwell Drive-In. Constructed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to bring the community together safely to experience cinema, the Shotwell Drive-In will exhibit films throughout the summer leading up to the Camden International Film Festival at its Rockport location just off Route 1.

The 2022 Shotwell Summer Series will begin on June 2 with a special screening of the new documentary film We Feed People, the latest film from National Geographic, and Oscar-winning director Ron Howard. The film spotlights renowned chef José Andrés and his nonprofit World Central Kitchen’s incredible mission and evolution over 12 years, from being a scrappy group of grassroots volunteers to becoming one of the most highly regarded humanitarian aid organizations in the disaster relief sector.

This special screening is co-presented by AIO Food Pantry, which will be on-site doing a non-perishable food drive.

The Shotwell’s Opening Weekend will continue with Everything Everywhere All At Once on June 4. Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, the film is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action-adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman who can't seem to finish her taxes, according to Points North, in a news release.

The 2022 Summer Series will screen everything from documentaries to beloved classics each Thursday and Saturday, with several special pre-release sneak preview screenings and other special events sprinkled throughout the season. Last year The Shotwell hosted an early screening of the Academy-Award-winning film CODA months before its platform release. The Shotwell will also be a main venue for the 18th edition of the Camden International Film Festival, taking place in person from September 15-18 throughout venues in Camden, Rockport, and Rockland, Maine, and online from September 15-25.

Several exciting new documentary films will be screened in June including Academy Award-winner Andrea Arnold latest film, COW, an intimate portrait of one dairy cow's life; The Sanctity of Space, which follows climbers/filmmakers Renan Ozturk and Freddie Wilkinson as they retrace the steps of pioneering mountaineer and aerial photographer Bradford Washburn, and the Bitterbrush, the latest feature from CIFF and Points North Fellow alum Emelie Mahdavian, which revisits the genre of the western and invites us to rethink the challenge of nomadism from the perspective of two young women.

In honor of Juneteenth, two new titles will be shown: The award-wining documentary Beba, a raw, poetic self-portrait in which young, NYC-born Afro-Latina Rebeca “Beba” Huntt stares down historical, societal, and generational trauma; and, Neptune Frost, the wildly inventive new musical science fiction film, directed by Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman that has taken the prestigious film festival circuit by storm.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert will screen in honor of Pride month. The film centers three showgirls (Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, and Guy Pearce) resplendent in flamboyant ball gowns, looking down over the vast red Australian desert for the dream of a lifetime; a four-week cabaret engagement in Alice Springs.
