Erika Manning shows abstract collages and mixed media paintings at Zoot, 5 Elm Street in Camden, through the month of June 2026. A reception will be held June 18, from 5 to 7 p.m., during the Third Thursday Art Walk.

In this body of work, Manning sought to create something fresh and new out of work that was never actually resolved. In doing so she discovered that she really wanted to stretch out of her comfort zone and use materials she hadn’t worked with recently (or ever) to create something novel out of old ideas, according to a news release. 

All the work in this show is pieced together from, and quite literally built upon earlier work, which you can sometimes see if you look carefully, according to the release. Working with beginner mind and the idea of personal history and alchemical transformation, Manning used portions of paintings that didn’t fly, old book pages, 70’s wallpaper, scraps of paper she’s saved for years, as well as a color pallet and drawing media that felt uncomfortable to use.

"The result is an interesting layering of media and techniques, incorporating the idea that what is underneath the exterior is just as important as what is readily and immediately seen," said the release.

Zoot is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
