Nancy Lee Smith, obituary
WALDOBORO — Nancy Lee Smith, 73, died on March 27, 2026, at her home in Waldoboro surrounded by her loving family. Nancy was born July 20, 1952, in Rockland to Douglas Knowlton and Clara Church Lane. Nancy grew up in Rockland and attended local schools.
Nancy got married and started her family. She began working as a caregiver for the elderly and continued caring for many grateful people with love over the last forty-six years at her home in Waldoboro. Nancy started caregiving at her home in 1978 and retired in 2024. Nancy was well known for being full of energy, always busy cleaning, and caring for people and family in a loving way.
She always enjoyed spending time with her family at family gatherings, celebrations, and especially going out to dinner. She also really enjoyed cooking for family and friends at home as well. Nancy enjoyed scratching lottery tickets, bingo, watching Food Network, shopping, and delivering her fudge and cookies to local businesses in Waldoboro. Most of all Nancy enjoyed peaceful times camping on Lake Pemaquid sitting by a campfire catching up on life with her family.
Nancy was an active member of the American Legion and the Safe Harbor Community Church in Waldoboro.
She was predeceased by her daughter Candy Smith Wright; her parents; brother Douglas Knowlton; sisters Ruth Prior and Sandra Simmons.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 50 years, Alan A. Smith, Sr. of Waldoboro; daughter Patricia Leach and her husband John of Warren; son, Alan Smith, Jr. of Waldoboro; sisters Barbara Morse and her husband Amon of Northport, Tina Bain of Bahamas, Karen Simmons and her husband Keith of Friendship, Valerie Wallace and her husband Rick of Union; brothers Alfred Knowlton and his wife Karen of Brunswick, Georgia, Malcolm Knowlton and his wife Anita of Thomaston; eight grandchildren, Courtney Leach Nascimento and her husband Yuri, Emily Leach and her husband Tommy Spaulding, Cameron Leach and his fiancé Neshamah Stearns, Taylor Smith and fiancé Alex Greenrose, Morgan Smith and fiancé Christian Rackliff, Quinn Smith and companion Francis Sprague III, Logan Wright, Aaliyah Wright and fiancé Travis Libby; seven great grandchildren, Alannah Wright, Gwenivere Greenrose, Sicily Greenrose, Sophia Nascimento, Mateo Nascimento, Oakley Rackliff, Oliver Libby; several nieces, nephews and cousins; like a daughter to Nancy, Jessica Vanlier Lisandra of Waldoboro; like a son to Nancy, John McKenzie of Augusta; sister-in-law Elaine Knowlton of Waldoboro; brother-in-law Verge Prior, Jr.; special cousins, Cathy and Evelyn; close friends, Rhonda and Harland Blodgett of Vermont.
A graveside service to celebrate Nancy’s beautiful life will be held May 8, at 1 p.m., at the Riverside Cemetery, Route 32, Waldoboro.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Nancy’s memory to the Safe Harbor Community Chapel, 50 Mill Street, Waldoboro, ME 04572.
