ROCKPORT and BELFAST — MaineHealth Pen Bay and Waldo Hospitals are expanding access to specialized endocrine care in Midcoast Maine with the addition of endocrinologist Jacob Quaytman, MD, who is now seeing patients at MaineHealth Endocrinology and Diabetes practices in Belfast and Rockport.
"Dr. Quaytman joins a growing team dedicated to improving access to comprehensive endocrine services close to home for area residents," said MaineHealth, in a news release.
Quaytman provides care for patients with a wide range of endocrine conditions, including thyroid disease, parathyroid disease, adrenal disorders, osteoporosis and complex diabetes cases, such as Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes that are difficult to control. He also provides hormone replacement therapy, including testosterone and estrogen replacement therapy.
"There's a huge need for endocrine care in our area," said Dr. Quaytman. "So many people struggle with these conditions, and we now have more tools than ever to help patients improve their metabolic health and quality of life. We can do so much more for people than we could even 10 years ago, making treatment more effective and easier to manage."
Endocrinology is the medical specialty focused on the endocrine system, the network of glands and hormones that regulate many of the body's essential functions, including metabolism, growth, reproduction and bone health.
Before joining MaineHealth in 2024, Dr. Quaytman served as chief endocrinology fellow in the Department of Medicine's Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He completed both his endocrinology fellowship and internal medicine residency at UPMC and earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also holds a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in neuroscience from St. Mary's College of Maryland.
According to MaineHealth, the addition of Dr. Quaytman further strengthens the region's growing endocrine program and complements the expertise of Lauren Slattery, MD, an endocrine surgeon at MaineHealth Waldo Hospital. Endocrinologists and endocrine surgeons often work closely together to diagnose and treat endocrine diseases, ensuring patients receive coordinated care throughout their treatment journey.
"We are trying to make it easier to access endocrine care in the Midcoast," said Dr. Quaytman. "I'm excited to work with Dr. Slattery to make more comprehensive endocrine services available right here in our communities."
Dr. Slattery specializes in parathyroid and thyroid surgery, as well as minimally invasive laparoscopic adrenal surgery, an advanced technique that offers faster recovery, less post-operative pain and reduced risk to surrounding organs.
"Previously, many patients had to travel to Bangor or Portland for endocrine surgeries," said Dr. Slattery. "These are often low-risk, outpatient procedures that can safely be performed in a rural hospital when the appropriate expertise, training and equipment are available. We're excited to provide these surgeries in Belfast and help patients receive high-quality care closer to home."
Patients interested in seeing Dr. Quaytman should speak with their primary care provider about a referral. He is accepting patients at MaineHealth Endocrinology and Diabetes Belfast and MaineHealth Endocrinology and Diabetes Rockport.
