Lincoln County Historical Association offers training session for tour guides, greeters
Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) invites community members to a training session for tour guides and greeters at its three house museums. The two-hour program, called Docent College, will be held May 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Maine Tasting Center in Wiscasset. Both seasoned docents and new volunteers are encouraged to participate.
LCHA has opportunities for new volunteers at all three of its historic properties: the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, and the Old Jail in Wiscasset.
This free program offers a welcoming introduction to what it means to serve as a volunteer tour guide at LCHA’s historic sites. Those simply interested in learning more are encouraged to attend, according to LCHA, in a news release. No prior experience is necessary.
"At the same time, experienced docents will find fresh insights, updates, and engaging discussion tailored to enrich their work as well," said LCHA.
The program is designed not only to provide an overview of the upcoming season, but also to facilitate sharing between new volunteers and longtime docents. Through interactive discussion, attendees will explore best practices for leading engaging tours and learn directly from experienced guides.
A professional tour guide will also offer practical tips and techniques to help docents build confidence and create memorable visitor experiences throughout the summer.
Participants may choose to serve at one or multiple sites. Following the main session, each site will host a companion gathering, giving participants the chance to dive into site-specific information while continuing to build community with fellow docents.
Volunteer opportunities are flexible and based on individual availability. The Pownalborough Court House is open Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., while the Chapman-Hall House and Old Jail are open Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Docents may choose to serve as greeters or tour guides, and new volunteers will have the opportunity to shadow experienced docents before leading tours on their own.
Docent College is welcome to all interested people and there is no obligation to commit to volunteering for the full season.
Light refreshments will be provided, and the program promises an engaging and welcoming experience.
