STEM Fest brings hands-on innovation, discovery to Owls Head Transportation Museum
Event Date
Saturday, May 09, 2026 - 10:00 am to 02:00 pm
Join OHTM on Saturday, May 9, for a full day where kids can explore, build, and discover things they’ve probably never seen before. From 3D printing and laser cutting to model airplane activities and hands-on engineering challenges, STEMFest turns curiosity into real experiences. Kids can also meet real professionals in science, engineering, aviation, and technology - asking questions, seeing how things work, and discovering careers they might not have known existed. It’s also a great chance for curious kids to meet others who love building, experimenting, and figuring out how the world works. (Photo courtesy Owls Head Transportation Museum)

(Photo courtesy Owls Head Transportation Museum)The Owls Head Transportation Museum invites students, families, and educators from across Maine to experience STEM Fest, a two-day celebration of science, technology, engineering, math, and skilled trades on May 8–9.
This expanded event begins on Friday, May 8, with a dedicated School Day, where the museum will be closed to the public, designed to give students an immersive, hands-on STEM experience. Schools interested in participating are encouraged to reach out for details on how to get involved, and transportation fee reimbursements may be available to help make attendance more accessible.
On Saturday, May 9, STEM Fest opens to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (with museum access until 4 p.m.), offering a free, family-friendly day featuring live demos, hands-on activities, and opportunities to meet the people behind Maine’s industries.
Hosted throughout the museum and its new Science & Industry Center, STEM Fest transforms the campus into an interactive showcase of innovation and real-world application. Designed to connect young learners with future opportunities, the event highlights both STEM pathways and skilled trades through direct engagement with professionals and organizations from across the state.
Visitors can explore a wide range of activities, including electrifying science demonstrations, 3D printing and laser cutting, model airplane building, and custom leather stamping. Additional highlights include live Energy Room demonstrations and hands-on projects throughout the Science & Industry Center. Weather permitting, antique car rides will also be available, offering a unique link between historical innovation and modern technology.
Participating partners include the OHTM Great Race Team, Robotics Institute of Maine, UMaine Physics on the Road, Experimental Aircraft Association, Maine Motor Transportation Association, Wings Over Hope, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Bath Iron Works, Apprenticeshop, Youth-led business R&D Dept. LLC, Dizzy Lizzy Automotive Upholstery, and more.
"Together, they will present interactive exhibits and provide a rare opportunity for attendees to engage directly with professionals working across a wide range of industries," said OHTM.
"STEM Fest serves as the museum’s signature education initiative, focused on building curiosity, strengthening community connections, and encouraging the next generation to explore careers in STEM fields and the skilled trades," said the museum.
The event is free and open to the public on May 9 for STEM Fest Community Day.
STEM Fest is generously supported by major sponsors Allen Insurance and First National Bank, with additional support from Moody’s Collision Centers, Samoset Resort, and Central Maine Power.
About the Science & Industry Center at Owls Head Transportation Museum
In the summer of 2025, we proudly opened the new Science & Industry Center (S&IC) as part of Phase 3 in our Capital Campaign. The S&IC is a hands-on learning hub for all ages, showcasing the production of industry in aviation and automotive. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits like Tinker’s Garage, Lego Derby, and the Airplane Launcher, or engage in STEM classes, workshops, and FabLab activities. With dedicated classrooms, a science stage, and programs in robotics, engines, 3D printing, and innovation, the center connects families, students, and the community to real-world STEM learning and workforce readiness opportunities.
