THOMASTON — James B. Buhrendorf, 68, of Thomaston, passed away at Maine Medical Center in Portland on May 7, 2021 after a lengthy illness.

Born November 30, 1952, the son of the late Bob and Jackie Buhrendorf, James (Jim) was raised in Simsbury, Connecticut. James had a profound, lifelong connection to his classmates at Simsbury High School, cherishing them as family.

As a young man, James played hockey and soccer and was an enthusiast of cycling, skiing, scuba diving, carpentry, gardening, reading, and sketching. He earned a history degree from St. Lawrence University, worked as a history teacher and freelance public relations writer, and owned a guitar shop for a time. He also lived in Connecticut and Essex County, Massachusetts. James was known for his lifelong love of the guitar, playing solo gigs, and most importantly, rocking out with friends in bands and jam sessions at venues and events around Cape Ann.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kay; and is survived by stepsons Charles and David.

Known for his warmth, loyalty, intellect, and abundant humor, James will be dearly missed.

Donations in his honor would be welcome to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Cape Ann Community Cinema, or Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue.

There will be no formal funeral service.
