Hundreds visit SMCC South Portland campus for Fall Open House
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Hundreds of prospective students and their families visited Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) on Saturday, Oct. 25, for the College’s annual Fall Open House, where visitors explored academic programs, toured the scenic oceanfront campus, and met the faculty and staff who help students launch rewarding careers.
The event showcased SMCC’s more than 40 degree and certificate programs, flexible course schedules, and hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for success in Maine’s workforce. Attendees had the opportunity to speak with faculty members, admissions and financial aid staff, current students, and academic advisors to learn more about the student experience and how to take the next step toward enrollment.
“This event truly captures what makes SMCC special — a welcoming community committed to helping every student succeed, explore their passions, and find their place in Maine’s future workforce,” Kristen Miller, SMCC President said.
Visitors also learned about the Free College Scholarship program, expanded Early College opportunities for high school students, and short-term training options that connect directly to high-demand industries such as health care, construction, and technology.
Prospective student Colby Pulk of Old Orchard Beach attended the Open House to explore SMCC’s Computer Science program.
“I’m interested in computer science and the degree here, and I was also drawn to SMCC because the tuition is pretty low,” Pulk said.
He’s also considering other institutions but noted that SMCC’s location and affordability make it an appealing place to start his college journey close to home.
The event drew visitors from across Maine, many experiencing the South Portland Campus for the first time. Tours highlighted classrooms, labs, residence halls, and student spaces, as well as the College’s stunning oceanfront setting overlooking Casco Bay.
Attendees were also able to learn about SMCC’s five-time USCAA National Champion SeaWolves athletic program, experience the diverse student activities offered across campus, and learn about important student resources such as Captain’s Cupboard food pantry and the Advocacy Resource Center (ARC), which provides access to essential support programs designed to meet students where they are and help them overcome challenges—along with many more resources available to help students succeed.
