'Frames of Mind: From Away and From Here' on exhibit at Gallery 162
ROCKPORT — Gallery 162 will present Frames of Mind: From Away and From Here, a photographic exhibition bringing together the work of two photographers Ni Rong and Ron Hart, who came to Maine from elsewhere and have made the state their home for decades. The exhibition opens Saturday, August 29, at Gallery 162, located at 162 Russell Avenue, Rockport, in the former CMCA building, and remains on view through September 12.
Both photographers are, in the Maine vernacular, “from away,” according to Gallery 162, in a news release. Yet their work reflects very different ways of looking at the places they inhabit and encounter. One photographer turns a close and attentive eye toward Mid-Coast Maine, creating portraits of people who live and work in the region alongside photographs of the coastal landscape. The other moves between Maine and locations around the world, finding visual connections in subjects as diverse as water, the streets of Paris, and moments of private reflection.
The latter body of work is organized in three sections. The Playfulness of Water explores movement, reflection, light, and the unexpected possibilities of water as a photographic subject. Paris presents high-contrast black-and-white images of people encountered on the city's streets, capturing gestures, encounters, and fleeting moments of urban life. Private Time, in color, turns inward, portraying individuals absorbed in quiet moments of pause and reflection.
"Together, the photographs in Frames of Mind explore how place shapes what we see—and how the act of looking can transform the familiar," said Gallery 162. "From the people and landscapes of coastal Maine to the streets of Paris and intimate moments far from home, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the connections between where we live, where we travel, and the moments we notice along the way."
