The Waldoboro Public Library will host "Displacement:  Immigrant Portraits" by Jean Kigel from September 14 through October 31. The show includes eleven watercolor portraits of immigrants from Ukraine, South America, Central America, Gaza, and Africa.  

"These portraits provide ways of seeing and understanding others," said a Library news release. "Kigel’s  work is truly a beautiful, emotional, disturbing, yet inspiring, world history lesson and a call to action. Each painting is accompanied by a wall text about immigration issues. The works and the stories they tell are moving and timely. A traveling show, Displacement has circulated amongst five other Midcoast libraries, where it has garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback."   

Kigel’s own grandparents were immigrants who came to the United States seeking a better future. All four of her grandparents were born in Latvia and immigrated to Massachusetts. Kigel’s mother and father then moved to Warren. Many of Kigel’s early friends and neighbors were Finnish or German and some of her teachers were from India, Thailand, and Spain.

“Just take a look at our healthcare system, our agriculture, our construction industry, our science and computer technology, and there’s no denying the benefits of foreigners to this melting pot of a country,” says Kigel. 

The library located on 958 Main St. and is open Mon. & Thu. 12-7.; Wed.& Fri. 10-5; and Sat. 9-1.  Closed Tue. and Sun.
