Darrell Grierson, obituary
UNION — Darrell Grierson, 61, of Union, passed away on February 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a period of declining health. Born in Damariscotta on March 3, 1964, he was the stepson of Reino and Velma (Achorn) Greenrose.
Darrell grew up in Union and attended local schools, graduating from Medomak Valley High School. Later on in his life he attended Kennebec Valley Community College, studying business. Darrell worked for several years in carpentry before beginning a long career at Bath Iron Works, where he worked as a machinist for 33 years.
In addition to his work at Bath Iron Works, Darrell proudly owned and operated Midcoast Seal Coating for more than 38 years. Over the decades, he sealed and also snow plowed countless driveways throughout the Midcoast and became well known to many families and businesses in the area.
Darrell was a man who loved being active and spending time with those he cared about most. He enjoyed riding his Harley, boating, fishing, card games, camping trips, and making memories with friends and family. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. Darrell and his wife, Andrea, rarely missed their grandchildren’s sporting events and were always there to lend a helping hand and cheer them on from the sidelines.
He especially enjoyed attending Maine Agricultural Fairs with Andrea and their friends, often camping in Fryeburg during fair week. Darrell also devoted much of his life to serving his community. He was a proud 30-year member and former chief of the Appleton Fire Department, served as Appleton’s EMA Director for several years, coached Farm Team and Little League baseball for many seasons, and was an active member of the Kora Shriners, where he participated in parades and was a member of the flag unit.
Darrell was always willing to lend a hand whenever someone needed help. He was constantly busy, whether working, volunteering, helping family and friends, or enjoying the outdoors. After retiring, he had hoped to spend more time at his Florida home, but declining health prevented him from fully enjoying those plans.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, David Grierson.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Andrea Grierson of Union; his son, Kevin Grierson and girlfriend Amy Hall of Appleton; his daughter, Kathy Grierson of Appleton; his sisters, Melinda Smith of Warren and Belinda Williams of Appleton; his brothers, Rolle Smith and wife Antoinette of Waldoboro and Donald Grierson of Appleton; his cherished grandchildren, Bailey Doucette, Mason Doucette, and Finnley Grierson, all of Appleton; along with several nieces and a nephew.
Darrell will be remembered for his hard work, generosity, dedication to his community, and the love he had for his family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
An informal Celebration of Life Barbecue will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026, starting at 12 p.m., at the Appleton Fire Department, 2915 Sennebec Road, Appleton.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro. To extend a condolence or share a story with the Grierson family, please visit Darrell’s Book of Memories at www.hallfunerlahomes.com
