Sunday, July 19, 2026 - 10:00 amCUSHING — The Washington Grunge, in partnership with Georges River Land Trust and Midcoast Conservancy, presents Welcoming Walkabouts, a hiking series for LGBTQIA+ community members at various trails throughout the Midcoast. LGBTQIA+ community members, along with their allies, are invited to explore the preserve’s woodland, riverside trails and connect with new and familiar friends.
Join in on the next Welcoming Walkabout on Sunday, July 19, at 10 a.m., at Georges River Land Trust’s Cross Cushing Nature Preserve.
"This hidden gem takes hikers through hemlock forests with views of rolling, mossy hills," said GRLT, in a news release.
Hikers should expect some elevation and roots along the ground. The hike will cover 1.6 miles of trails and will last about two hours. There is an opportunity for those who want to take a dip in the ocean. The preserve includes a small spur trail to the ocean directly across the street from the trailhead.
These walks are free and open to all ages. Children and leashed dogs are welcome. Please register at georgesriver.org/events. If you take photos at the event, please make sure you have permission from others.
The Washington Grunge is an affirming rural community for LGBTQIA+ folks, families, and friends. Founded in west Knox County, all are welcome to come as they are. Welcoming Walkabouts are hosted by Grunge Founder Sarah Masters. Masters is a local journalist covering regional arts programming.
