Celia Wallace, obituary
THOMASTON — Celia Stone Wallace, 92, passed away Feb. 8, 2014, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Born in Thomaston June 11, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Marceline Allen Stone. Educated in local schools, she was a graduate of Thomaston High School, Class of 1939. After graduation, she attended Eastern State Normal School at Castine, and graduated in 1942 with a teaching degree. She taught school in Winterport and Howland, where she met William “Bill” Wallace, a resident of that town. They were married Sept. 20, 1945. While Bill was on his one-year re-enlistment in the U.S. Army, they resided in Fort Sill, Okla., Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Benning, Ga.
Upon their return, they made their home in Thomaston, and later St. George, where Celia continued teaching at Wiley's Corner School. After several years they moved back to Thomaston and made their home there. They had one daughter, Patty, who was such a help to them both during their later years.
For more than 40 years, Celia was a member of the United Methodist Church of Camden. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #37 in Thomaston for nearly 60 years, serving as president of the unit for a time, and later as secretary, an office she held for 47 years. She and six others formed a 7-Club, meeting monthly and with the mission of helping veterans and their families. For 25 years they met each month at each other's homes and shared a meal together. Celia was the last remaining member of the club. Celia was also a member of the D.A.R. for more than 50 years, and a 40-year member of the Society for Mayflower Descendants, joining for her ancestor William Bradford. For several years she was a member of the St. George Grange, and later the Weymouth Grange in Thomaston until its closure. She was also a member of the Friendship V.F.W. Auxiliary for several years.
In the 1960s, Celia and Bill enjoyed their new cottage, which they had built on the St. George River. They spent many happy times there with family and friends.
After 62 years of marriage, Bill passed away in 2007. Since that time, Celia has remained independent, living in the home they shared together for almost 50 years.
Celia loved nature, the wildflowers, birds and animals. She loved going for car rides with her daughter, and especially country rides during all four seasons. She was able to do so up until her illness in December. Celia also loved reading, doing puzzle books, corresponding through cards and letters, and enjoyed her beautiful collection of cardinal birds. She loved her grandchildren, Melanie and Brian, and her two great-grandsons, Jacob and Joshua. She enjoyed having the entire family at her house for the holidays and other special occasions.
Other than her parents, Celia was predeceased by her husband, Bill; a brother, Lewis Stone; a sister, Katherine Stone; and her son-in-law, Robert Beckett. She is survived by her daughter, Patty Beckett; her granddaughter, Melanie Hyatt; her grandson, Brian Beckett and his wife, Lidia, and her children; two great-grandsons, Jacob Hyatt and Joshua Beckett; and her sister-in-law, Marion Stone, all of Thomaston; her nephew, Lewis “Rocky” Stone and his wife, Anita, and their family of Barrington, N.H.; her nieces, Sheryl Gregory and her husband, John, and Kathy Stone, all of Litchfield; her sisters-in-law, Gloria Jones of Millinocket and Florence Wallace of Meriden, Conn.; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ellen and Everett Danforth of Carmel; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Frank and Alice Wallace of East Millinocket and Ronald and Imogene Wallace of Passadumkeag; as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.
A graveside service will be held in the springtime with burial at Village Cemetery in Thomaston.
