The Camden Rotary Club is offering a free public program to help the citizens of Kyiv, Ukraine, purchase portable generators to offset the lack of electricity due to the Russian bombing of their power grid and electrical infrastructure. This is the second year that Camden Rotary has offered the program.
A public program on the Ukraine Portable Generator Project will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Camden, at 55 Elm Street.
A livestream will connect the audience with Rotarian Volodymyr Pilipenko, founder of the Kyiv-Balzac Rotary Club, as well as Peter Chabursky, a Canadian Rotarian who coordinates support from Rotary Clubs in North America. They will explain the challenges that the people of Kyiv face, as well as the benefits of supplying citizens with portable generators.
"And we will explain how Maine citizens may make a donation to support this effort," said Clark Doran, president of the Camden Rotary Club, in a Rotary news release.
For last winter, the Camden and West Bay Rotary Clubs, plus donations from citizens in the Midcoast area, supplied $32,000 for the purchase of portable generators in Kyiv, where Russia’s destruction of the country’s power infrastructure left three million people mostly without power and water for much of the winter.
“This donation to the Ukrainian generator project will provide much-needed support for families and daycare centers,” said Peter Chabursky, chair of the Rotary Intercountry Committee Canada-Ukraine, which is collecting funds from Canada, the U.S., and Mexico to purchase and distribute in Kyiv through the Kyiv-Balzac Rotary Club.

The generators cost between $480 and $2,500 each in U.S. dollars, according to Rotary.
-
“We are happy to support the Ukrainians with portable generators,” said Doran, “and we are inviting voluntary donations from individual Rotarians and members of the public who seek a tangible way to help the people of Kyiv.”
-
To donate to the Ukraine Generator Project, please write a check made out to the Camden Rotary Club Foundation. You can mail your check to the Camden Rotary Club, PO Box 602, Camden, ME 04843, or bring it to the November 5 meeting. One hundred percent of donated funds will go directly to this relief effort.
