ROCKPORT — Taiwan has a contested history and status that has made it a flashpoint in U.S.-China relations, according to a Camden Conference news release.
As a Camden Conference Community Event, Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 7 p.m., at Rockport Public Library, Stephen Harder, Vice President of the Camden Conference, will discuss that special history and status, as well as Taiwan's economic and military importance for both the US and China, its role as chip maker for the world, and how we might avoid a Taiwan crisis with global implications.
Harder has lived and studied in Taiwan and lived and practiced international law in Europe and China, including 20 years in Hong Kong and Shanghai, where he was professor of practice of law at New York University in Shanghai.
This free community event is hosted by the Rockport Public Library in anticipation of the 40th Annual Camden Conference, Beyond the American Century: A New World Order?, February 19–21, 2027. The Conference will be held live at the Camden Opera House and livestreamed to the Strand Theatre in Rockland and Lunt Auditorium in Falmouth, and to homes and classrooms worldwide.
