Camden Hills Girls Soccer teams wind down season with two wins; last regular games set for Oct. 21
The Camden Hills Windjammer Girls Soccer teams prevailed in two games last week, and now are looking forward to their last game of season before stepping into playoffs. On Tuesday, Oct. 21, varsity and junior varsity players will travel to Oakland and take on Messalonskee players at their home field.
On Oct. 16, the Jammers completely shut down the Bangor Witches at home.
The Witches are a known rival of the Jammers having beat the Jammer girls in the Northern Regional Finals last year and pulling out a win against them earlier this season.
The Jammer girls went into the game thirsty for a victory, and adrenaline was running high on both ends.
The game kicked off with the Witches in white and the Windjammers sporting pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Sophomore Molly Williams, #10, received the ball off of a throw-in, and used her technical skills to get around the Bangor player, and fire a left-footed shot low into the bottom corner setting the pace for the game early on.
With a lead of 1-0, it was still anyone’s game and the Jammers weren't liking it. Molly Williams set up her corner kick and let it fly right as Freshman Liv Domareki, #3, was looping around the 18-yard box. With a one touch finish into the side of the goal, the corner kick put the Jammers up 2-0.
The Jammers, hungry to end the game a win, held the score until halftime thanks to authoritative displays of defense on the back line from Junior Lucy Ward, #5; Senior Maya Stone, #17; Senior Sophie Helmstetter #21; Freshman Nathalie Nelson; and Sophomore Maia Andrews, #2, effectively shutting down the Witches striker, limiting her to few looks at goal.
Heading into the second half with the same energy as before, the Jammers fought an aggressive battle of possession and tackles until a foul was called right outside the Witches 18-yard box. Molly Williams stepped up to take the free kick and surprisingly fired it low into the corner, catching Bangor’s goalie totally off guard.
Up 3-0, the Jammers focused on persistent defense and finding the feet of their midfielders, including Senior Maddie Cronkite, #6. Until the whistle blew signaling the end of the game, the Jammers never once let up and didn’t give the Witches a single taste of victory.
The JV Jammers ended the game in a tie of 0-0, having to cut the game short at only 35 minutes of gameplay due to no lighting at our home field.
On Oct. 14, the Jammers played at home and sailed past Oxford Hills.
Sophomore Eve Domareki, #13, netted one early on for the Jammers to ensure the leading position.
Over the course of both the halves, the Jammers girls made sure that they would leave the pitch winners, with Sophomore Molly Williams, #10, and Eve Domareki both securing the lucky hat trick for their team.
Senior Izzy Debrosky, #12, didnot fail to add to the tally, soaring two in perfectly.
Freshman Elsa Schwalm, #19, left her mark on the field, and on the net, forcing her way through the defenders and laying in two for the Jammers.
Junior Lucy Ward, #5, the Jammer’s renowned center back, found herself placed on the wing and didn’t fail to achieve her first varsity career goal. A switch up for the team and herself, considering her usual position of defending opposing shots, not firing them!
Senior Ollie Martens, #11, and Freshman Eliza Gallant maintained a dominant shut out for the Windjammer girls.
The JV Jammers secured the 5-0 win, a confident show of grace on the field.
