Former school bus driver charged with manslaughter following death of student
(UPDATE Jan. 16) On Jan.15, Rockland Police arrested Jeffery Colburn, 65, of Camden, the driver of a bus that fatally struck a student Nov. 21, 2025.
Colburn was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of 12-year-old Brayden Callahan, according to the Rockland Police Department, in a news release.
Coburn was arrested on a warrant that was issued by the Knox County District Attorney’s Office after he was indicted by the grand jury.
He will make his initial appearance in Knox County Court Friday afternoon, Jan. 16. He remains at the Knox County Jail where he was taken after his arrest.
Since the time of the incident, Rockland Police, including Rockland’s Criminal Investigation Division have continued to work diligently on this investigation, working hand and hand with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation included interviews of numerous witnesses, legal process and review of relevant records, consultation with subject matter experts and assistance from the Maine State Police, Bureau of Highway Safety, Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Maine Health & Environmental Testing Laboratory, Bureau of Motor Vehicles and RSU-13.

(Update Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025) Rockland Police have confirmed that a child has succumbed to injuries suffered after being struck by a vehicle on Broadway, in Rockland, Friday afternoon.

ROCKLAND — A crash reconstruction team from the State Police was called to Broadway, in Rockland, Friday afternoon, following an incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
The patient, who is a student of RSU 13, was transported to MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital, and then LifeFlighted to Maine Med with life threatening injuries.
That child was allegedly struck by a school bus at the crosswalk at the Eliza Steele Drive entryway to Broadway.
The District Attorney's Office has been notified. The road reopened at 4:20 p.m.
