Belfast Marine Institute students explore a shipwreck on the Passagassawakeag River
Belfast Area High School students in Genna Black and Chip Lagerbom's Marine Studies class recently visited a foreshore shipwreck along the Passagassawakeag River in Belfast as part of their Belfast Marine Institute unit on maritime archaeology.
They were there to analyze the wreck, document its features, take measurements, describe its condition, and hypothesize as to the vessel's type, age, purpose, and fate while defending their theories with evidence gathered at the visit.
Another part of the project was to produce a hand drawn scale poster of the wreck with appropriate labels and information, including artifacts found in association with the vessel. For more information about the Belfast Marine Institute and its endorsement pathway, visit the Aqua-Culture Program.
