Artistic inspiration blooms at local 'Vernal Shift' conference
BELFAST – As the Maine landscape begins its seasonal transition, art educators from across the state gathered recently at Belfast Area High School (BAHS) for the Maine Art Education Association (MAEA) Spring Conference, aptly titled "Vernal Shift: Thawing Creative Practice." The event, graciously coordinated by Heidi O’Donnell, brought together 63 arts educators from across the State dedicated to bringing fresh perspectives and innovative techniques back to their classrooms.
The day was anchored by a robust professional development schedule. In a time-honored MAEA tradition, workshops were facilitated "for members, by members," providing educators with vital leadership opportunities to share expertise with their peers.
A Masterclass in Creativity
Fourteen educators presented on a diverse array of medium-specific and pedagogical topics. Sessions ranged from traditional techniques to contemporary social themes, including:
-
Technical Artistry: Watercolor Landscapes (Audrey Parker, Lincoln Middle School and Adult Education, Portland), Intaglio Printmaking (Charlie Johnson, Mount Desert Island High School), Nature's Relief in Metal (Vicki Bove, Retired), Photogram Fun (Jennie Driscoll, Brunswick High School), and Toad-ally Terrific Clay Whistles (Hope Lord, Waterville Senior High School).
-
Innovative Materials: Winter Wool (Ouda Baxter, Ecology Learning Center), Shrinky Zendinkles (Allie Rimkunas, Retired), and Stitched Resistance (Heidi O’Donnell, Belfast Area High School).
-
Pedagogy & Identity: Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s Virtual Look Inside portal (Rori Smith and Tori Marsh, CMCA), Creating with Care (Kirstie Wheeler, Berklee College of Music), Get Creative Outdoors! (Serena Sanborn, Waterville Creates), and Unfreezing Identity – 3D Portraits (Stephen LaRochelle, Kennebec Valley Community College).
Student Leadership & Community Support
The logistics of the day were seamlessly managed by students from the Belfast Area High School (BAHS) National Art Honor Society (NAHS). These student volunteers served as the backbone of the event, directing traffic, managing room setups, and assisting with the final breakdown.
The students also infused the venue with creative flair, decorating the space with vibrant paint chip garland. One enterprising NAHS student created custom "art cookies" that proved to be a major hit. Attendees enjoyed a local taste of Belfast with lunch from Bell the Cat, and left with packed "swag bags." The conference's abundance was bolstered by Allie Rimkunas (Retired), who collected so many donations for the educators that the supplies barely squeezed into three vehicles.
Celebrating Excellence: 2026-2027 Award Recipients
The afternoon concluded with a dessert bar followed by the annual MAEA awards recognition ceremony. A unique hallmark of these honors is that each award is hand-crafted by a Maine art educator, making them distinct and artistic treasures in their own right. This year’s awards were created by Philippa Dyer (Mount Desert Island High School).
