Woods and Wetlands Summer Camp with Bangor Land Trust
Explore where wetlands and forests meet this summer in Bangor. Maine Outdoor School (MOS) will lead “Woods & Wetlands Camp” in partnership with Bangor Land Trust (BLT).
This summer day camp will take place on Bangor Land Trust preserves in Bangor, August 11-14, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. “Woods & Wetlands” invites curious 10–13-year-olds to investigate wetlands and the surrounding landscape through hands-on exploration and games.
Campers will explore how water shapes the land, uncover the wildlife that depends on wetlands, and trace food webs that connect plants, animals, and people. They’ll spend their days hiking, experimenting, and building observational skills, questioning, and caring for the natural world. The week wraps up with a focus on stewardship—how we can protect these special places and the wildlife that calls them home.
"Expect muddy boots, big questions, outdoor fun, and a deeper understanding of how land, water, and living things are connected," said a Maine Outdoor School news release.
Maine Outdoor School began collaborating with Bangor Land Trust last year in an effort to bring more youth and adults to their preserves to learn about nature. This year, they partnered to provide free outdoor school programming with Fourteenth Street School's first- and second-grade students from winter into the spring. One teacher shared, “My students became more observant of their surroundings. They used vocabulary that they learned in the MOS program in the classroom and every day conversation. [A highlight was] watching the children fall in love with outdoor learning.”
“We are excited to be bringing summer camp to BLT for the first time, giving kids the opportunity to connect more deeply with our preserves," said Bangor Land Trust Executive Director Stephanie Lindsell.
MOS Owner Hazel Stark said: “Partnering with Bangor Land Trust has allowed Maine Outdoor School to expand into the Bangor area, enabling us to get even more people outside, curious, and connected to the Maine outdoors.”
Pre-registration for Woods & Wetlands Camp is open until June 4. Campers will be selected through a lottery-based system.
Camp is free of charge, but donations to Bangor Land Trust are welcome. Adult volunteers with experience working with youth are invited to apply to join. For more information and to pre-register, visit MaineOutdoorSchool.org/Events.
