Violet Burton, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON — Violet Burton, 90, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Breakwater Commons in Rockland. Born in Back Cove, Waldoboro, Maine on July 4, 1934, she was the daughter of William and Flora Wallace Maxwell.
On June 6, 1952, Violet married Elbert Burton, Jr. Together they shared many years of happiness in the home they cared for together. She was a wonderful gardener and loved tending her flowers daily. The care of her home extended to the Forest Hill Cemetery which she kept immaculate for every service held there and each Memorial Day Weekend. It was often said there was not a blade of grass out of place.
She was a hard worker her entire life. She worked for many years at North Lubec Canning Company in Rockland, lobstered with her husband, worked as a cook at Rockland District High School, and finally ended her career working with her son at Strawberry Hill Seaside Inn in Rockport.
Violet had a special place in her heart for animals and had several pets over the years. She loved them all fiercely, but was especially fond of her last dog, ‘Holly’ whom she taught all kinds of tricks.
Predeceased by her brothers, Charles Maxwell and Arthur Carter; and a sister, Edith Bennett; Violet is survived by her sons, David Burton of Spruce Head, Dana Burton and his partner Kenneth Thompson of Rockport; her sister-in-law, Violet Karl of Rockland; and her special friends Janet and Phil Lambert of Marlboro, Massachusetts.
Violet’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Pope Memorial Humane Society, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
