Union honors citizens John Gibbons, Argy Nestor and Tracy Weed with Town Report Dedication and Spirit of America Proclamation

UNION — The Union Select Board honored several citizens — John Gibbons, Argy Nestor and Tracy Weed — for their contributions to the town, and their community service.
The three were surprised June 3, at a regularly scheduled Select Board meeting, when Board Chair Adam Fuller stood up and lifted a large plaque from behind the dais.
"We were all very surprised that this person has not received this in the past," said Fuller, when he held up the plaque, and read that the 2025 Union Annual Town Report was being dedicated to John Gibbons.
He cited the long list of contributions Gibbons has made to his town and community, including the expansion of broadband, "to every address in town that was not served."
Gibbons got up to receive his honors.
"Who is this old guy," he chuckled, looking at the photo of himself that is on the plaque.
"We are lucky to have you, and you have held our toes to the fire when you had to," said Fuller.
Gibbons said: "At my age, my goal is to help out in the background; otherwise, to stay out of the way. I am glad that you have found it useful."
The Dedication reads:
John Gibbons has lived a life defined by vision, dedication, and service. Born in January 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the eldest of four children, setting an example for his siblings with his innate curiosity and drive.
From an early age, he was captivated by the art of building, whether it was model airplanes or grand ideas. Something clicked when his father handed him a rubber band to rotate the propeller on a model plane. That spark led him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) halls, where he pursued his passion for aerospace. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1962, followed by a master’s degree in Automatic Controls in 1963.
It was 1957, the year Sputnik launched into orbit, that truly altered the trajectory of John’s life. That moment in history ignited his ambition to contribute to the field of engineering and innovation. His career reflected that passion, starting in defense, moving through space, and touching intelligence on his way. As a project manager from his mid-twenties onward, he achieved success with no regrets, leading teams and shaping technology with a steady hand and keen intellect.
But John’s contributions extend far beyond his profession. In 1995, he retired to Maine, where he continued his dedication to service by actively participating in local government and town affairs. His generosity and commitment to his community are reflected in the numerous committees and boards he served, including the Budget Committee, Select Board, Planning Board, and Veterans Monument Committee. Whether working to improve broadband access or shaping Union’s comprehensive plan, his presence was one of steady leadership and unwavering dedication.
Family has always been at the heart of John’s life. He has been married to his wife, Pat, for over 50 years, sharing a love that has stood the test of time. Together, they raised two daughters, one now living on a ranch in California and the other a teacher in Union. His two grandchildren, both in college, along with his beloved dogs, complete the picture of a life rich in love, connection, and legacy.
Beyond his professional and civic engagements, John finds joy in working on cars, building, reading, and immersing himself in nature. His hands have built more than just a career; they have crafted spaces, memories, and a home, including the in-law apartment and barn additions to the family house. His passion for service extends to his work at the church and within the town’s governance, embodying a life filled with purpose.
In reflecting on his life, John’s wish is simple: to be remembered as someone always there for others. And indeed, he has been. Through his dedication to his family, career, community, and the countless people he has touched along the way, John Gibbons stands as a testament to integrity, commitment, and a well-lived life.
This dedication honors John’s extraordinary contributions to the Town of Union and many others, as well as the remarkable life he has built.
The Select Board also honored Argy Nestor and Tracy Weed for their ongoing work on behalf of the community, with Fuller reading the resolution:
