Rockport gears up for third annual Donut Festival, June 13, 14
ROCKPORT — The Rockport Donut Festival, held by the Town of Rockport, will take place June 13 and 14, paying homage to the history of the donut and kicking off a two-day celebration to the start of summer.
In its third year, the annual festival hosts family-friendly activities in downtown Rockport and Marine Park, live music, food trucks, a parade, craft market, the CedarWorks Kid’s Tent, the Salty Seal Beer Garden, and thousands of delicious donuts from popular vendors from the Midcoast and beyond.
The festival will begin Friday, June 13, from 3 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, June 14, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission to the volunteer-supported event is free, thanks to the generous support of individual and business sponsors and on-site donations from the community.
Featured donut vendors will include Ruckus Donuts, Old Time Donuts, The Only Doughnut, Eighty 8 Donut Cafe, Dō Donuts & Coffee, Moody’s Diner, Morning Moose Coffee, Lovebirds Donuts, Frosty’s Donuts and The Holy Donut.
Expect more Maine-based donut vendors to be added to the line-up as the festival nears, according to the organizers.
Savory and alternative food options will be offered by a variety of vendors and food trucks including Vintage Dogs, Portable Pie Place, The Ugly Dumpling, Cheese the Day, Pacific Engine Company, Blanchard’s Ice Cream and American Flatbread. Adults with proper ID can visit the Salty Seal Beer Garden with Tap Truck 207 for a variety of beers and signature cocktails.
Live music and dancing will be a major festival attraction on both Friday and Saturday. The Mallett Brothers Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Saturday will feature live music throughout the day with Baywinds North Breakers Jazz, followed by a headliner performance by Motor Booty Affair on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. All music events are free to the public.
The community is encouraged to enter the 5K Donut Dash Fun Run and the Lobster Crate Race for a nominal fee, the “Donut Dip” into Rockport Harbor, the Homemade Donut Contest, and to visit the CedarWorks Kid’s Tent with activities presented by the Penobscot Bay YMCA and other community organizations.
“It has been said that the esteemed Captain Hanson Crockett Gregory of Clam Cove, Rockport, invented the donut with a hole in the center in 1847,” said Rockport Town Manager Jon Duke, in a news release. “We are looking forward to celebrating that legacy with our neighbors - and with people from all over Maine and beyond – with an outrageous amount of fun and donuts!”
Generous sponsors who offset festival expenses and help keep this event free to the public include, but are not limited to, CedarWorks, Yachting Solutions, Midcoast Villager, Wallace Events, Adventure Advertising, Bay Chamber Concerts & Music School, Maine State Credit Union, Gusco Consulting, Danica Candles, Barnswallow Books, Rockport Steel and Heiwa Tofu.
