UPDATE: Rockland stores lift lockdown order after police detain one in parking lot
ROCKLAND — Shoppers in and around Harbor Plaza, with includes Shaw's and Ocean State Job Lots, along with a bank, were kept inside for a brief time, Thursday morning, while police took one person into custody in the Ocean State Job Lots parking lot.
A little after 8 a.m., Rockland Police were put on alert and requested to locate a certain individual after receiving a report of an armed and suicidal individual who had made threats of self harm, as well as harm to others in the area. The individual also made threats to harm law enforcement if they responded, according to Deputy Chief Alex Gaylor. That person's vehicle was located by police in the Ocean State parking lot, with the person, in crisis, inside.
Out of fear of a bad outcome, RPD requested assistance from Rockport PD and Knox County Sheriff's Office to help at the scene, as well as to block road entryways so that unsuspecting shoppers didn't accidently drive into the middle of any potentially bad situation.
The individual was taken into protective custody without incident.
Rockland Police recovered several firearms, and the investigation is ongoing at this time.
There is no continued threat to the public, according to Gaylor.
