CUSHING — Phillip James Young, 87, of Cushing, passed away on August 9, 2026, after a brief illness at Windward Gardens in Camden, Maine.

Born on January 30, 1939, Phillip was the son of James Ward Young and Florence Jeanette (Robinson) Young. A lifelong resident of the community he cherished, Phillip attended local schools before making his living in wood harvesting and real estate development.

Phillip was a hardworking, self-made man whose strong work ethic defined much of his life. As the owner and operator of Young’s Forest Products, Phillip employed a great crew whose loyalty and hard work meant the world to him. For many years he worked alongside his son Phil Jr. before turning the daily operation of the business over to him.

Phillip developed much of the woodland he purchased over the years into house lots and was a landlord to many residents in Cushing. He took pride in helping as many people as he could.

Phillip married Suzanne Lydia (Martin) on April 16, 1960, in Thomaston, Maine, at the local church parsonage. The ceremony was attended by Douglas and Marjorie Young. Phillip and Suzanne had a vibrant social life that included dancing, boating, and RVing! They traveled by RV to Florida for many years. A favorite pastime of Phillip’s was watching horse pulling at the local fairs. He was also an avid fan of Merle Haggard.

Phillip was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Judith (Young) Meklin of Cushing.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Suzanne; his son Chris Young and his wife Andrea of Warren; Brenda Herrick and her husband Robert of Plano, Texas; sons Phillip Young, and Gregory Young and his wife Alli (with whom he shared a special relationship) of Cushing; his beloved grandchildren, Johnathon Young and partner Lacey Stone, Kendra Dawn Hayes and her spouse Asa, all of Thomaston, Cameron, Jace, and Myah Young, all of Cushing, Robert Herrick, Jr. and wife Paula of Russellville, Arkansas, and Raegan (Goulet) Babin and husband Zach of Unity; as well as several great-grandchildren: Trey, Owen, Madison, Benjamin, Jasper, and Curtis. Phillip also reluctantly left behind his beloved four-legged companion, Maggie-Mae, whom he lovingly referred to as his "million-dollar dog."

A memorial service will take place Friday, August 28, at 1 p.m., at the Broad Cove Church in Cushing, Maine, with a reception immediately following the service in the church’s heritage room. A private graveside committal will take place at Mason Cove Cemetery.
