No Kings Demonstration coming to Rockland, Oct. 18
Midcoast residents are invited to gather for a public demonstration, Saturday, Oct. 18, at Noon, in Rockland, as part of a second national No Kings Day of Action with thousands of events planned nationwide. The Rockland demonstration has been planned locally by The Audacity, a group of Midcoast Mainers committed to creative nonviolent action in support of democracy, human dignity, and the rule of law.
"These are not normal times and this is bigger than partisan political disagreement," said local organizer Peter Jenks. "The administration has defied court orders, seized control of police departments, deported American citizens, disappeared people without warrants, and slashed services to fund giveaways to billionaire allies. They've declared war against entire U.S. cities. Enough is enough."
The demonstration will begin with a rally from 12 noon to 1 p.m., in Rockland's Chapman Park, at the corner of Park and Main Street, featuring singing, free buttons and signs, and tables with information on how to get involved with local nonprofits supporting threatened communities. At 1 pm, participants will engage in a non-obstructive march through downtown Rockland to the Knox County Courthouse, the local seat of government.
The Rockland No Kings organizers have made a commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety, and organizers are trained in conflict de-escalation.
“We are ordinary citizens from all walks of life. Our message isn't complicated, and it shouldn't be controversial," said Jane Schroeder." If you agree that here in America, we don't abide dictators and we say no to kings, we invite you to join us.”
