ROCKLAND — A section of Park Street in Rockland closed to traffic following a motor vehicle crash involving a car and a motorcycle at approximately 5:30 p.m., Aug. 1. This day happens to be day 4 of the annual Maine Lobster Festival. The section of road from Broadway to Union Street reopened to vehicular traffic at approximately 7:35 p.m.

The motorcyle operator, a 20 year old male, was transported to MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital immediately following the crash, with serious and possible life threatening injury, according to Rockland PD, on their social media site. That person was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

As with all life threatening injury accidents, the Knox County District Attorneys Office was notified, and a crash reconstructionist from the Maine State Police responded to assist with the crash investigation which is ongoing, according to RPD.

"Preliminary investigation shows the motorcycle speed and operation maybe a factor," said the Facebook posting.

The investigation is on-going and no criminal charges have been filed.

Between 7 a.m., and 7:49 p.m., Aug. 1, Rockland Police responded to 10 motor vehicle accidents across the City of Rockland, Maine, including 3 serious property damage accidents with no injury and 4 personal injury accidents during which at least 5 people were transported to MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital.

Park Street in Rockland reopens after crash; law enforcement kept busy with crashes through the day

By 6:30 p.m., Aug. 1, Knox County law enforcement agencies had responded to multiple motor vehicle crashes, including four smaller crashes in Rockland in the hour prior to the closing of Downtown Main Street at 9:30 a.m., ahead of the 10 a.m. parade. Rockland Fire, EMS, and Police were called to the intersection of Union and Summer streets at approximately 8:25 a.m. South Thomaston EMS provided mutual aid for one incident that occured at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Park streets. Minutes later (approximately 9:05 a.m.), another crash occurred at Broadway and Talbot; and at 9:15 a.m., Thomaston FD, which had been staged at a road closure location for Main Street, provided first-response to one of the crashes. Another, 11:15 a.m. crash took place on Lake Avenue.

Among the Rockland calls were a couple of medical calls, at least one to the Festival grounds.

Elsewhere in the county, Union Fire and EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash near Union Hardware at approximately 4:40 p.m., and Warren Fire and EMS responded to a hit and run, at approximately 5:45 p.m.
