Midcoast Habitat opens registration for 2026 'Women Build' in Rockport
Midcoast Habitat for Humanity has opened registration for Women Build 2026, a hands-on volunteer event supporting the construction of permanently affordable homes in Knox County.
This year’s build will take place May 2, 3, 5, and 6 at Compass Point in Rockport, "a new 10-home pocket neighborhood designed to provide long-term affordable homeownership for local individuals and families," said Midcoast Habitat, in a news release.
Women Build brings together volunteers of all skill levels to work alongside Midcoast Habitat, building homes and community. Participants sign up and choose either a morning or afternoon build shift.
Past participants say the experience is both empowering and deeply rewarding.
“The Women Builds let me combine two things I care about: empowering women and girls and supporting needs in my community. I love the work, the camaraderie, and the reminder that solutions take all of us showing up in whatever capacity we can,” said Becca Gildred. “When my 6-year-old son was shocked that I could do construction work, it reminded me how important it is to change what kids, and society, believe women can accomplish.”
“As a mortgage lender I see the urgent need for fair housing every day. I’ve volunteered with several build projects with Habitat. Each time I leave my volunteer shift in awe of the organization, ability, and patience of their team to coordinate unskilled workers through such a big accomplishment,” said Alicia Costa. “I’m honored to invest my time in such a valuable project in our community and can’t wait to participate in Women Build 2026.”
Build shifts will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A Women Build dance party celebration will follow the build week, with additional details to be announced.
Women Build 2026 is made possible through the support of community partners, including lead sponsor The First, foundation sponsors Maine State Credit Union and Hay Runner, build partners Viking Lumber and The Tailored Closet, and community sponsor Ken Gardiner with Edward Jones.
