Event Date
Saturday, March 21, 2026 - 04:00 pmThe Waldo welcomes Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus for a free community concert on March 21, at 4 p.m.
Welcoming immigrant children from around the globe, the Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus helps restart young lives. War-torn villages, refugee camps, famine, and political upheaval were once the daily reality for many of the young singers who would eventually find safety, companionship, and harmony within the Pihcintu Multinational Girls Chorus. Though the memory of danger and loss never fully disappears, the healing power of music has helped these resilient young women learn to trust, hope, and laugh again.
Founded in Portland, Maine —"an ever-growing hub for international resettlement" said a Waldo Theatre news release — the chorus brings together girls from across the globe to sing as one. Conceived by award-winning producer, musician, and songwriter Con Fullam, Pihcintu unites voices from Cambodia, Congo, El Salvador, Egypt, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Vietnam, the British West Indies, and many more, along with girls whose families have lived in Maine for generations.
"Their presence is transformative, and their music touches the hearts of all who hear them," said the news release.
Since its founding in 2006, the chorus has performed for more than 300,000 live audience members and reached hundreds of millions through appearances on the Today Show, NPR, Voice of America, Al Jazeera, Univision, UN TV, YouTube, and more. They have graced stages such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Cathedral, and the United Nations.
More than 300 girls from 40 countries have participated in Pihcintu, achieving a 100% high-school graduation rate and 85% post-secondary enrollment.
"The chorus stands as a testament to Con Fullam’s vision—he is a five-time Emmy-nominated television producer and an award-winning songwriter committed to lifting young voices and sharing their stories with the world," said the release.
This performance featured the addition of a 6-piece backing band, Akiwacu from Burundi.
