Mario Turi, obituary
EAST NORTHPORT, New York and ROCKPORT, Maine — It is with deep sorrow that we share the sad news of Mario Turi's passing on April 7, 2026, at age 71, after a long and arduous battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia. In the end he was comfortable and passed away peacefully in his sleep. We take solace in knowing he is no longer suffering.
Mario was born and raised in Queens, New York, the firstborn son of Estonian immigrants. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery from Duke University and served honorably in the United States Navy.
His adventurous spirit led him to live and work in many places including North Carolina, Texas, Maryland, Florida, and even Abu Dhabi. But the beauty of Maine called to him and it is there that he lived the longest and the place he considered home. An avid outdoorsman, he loved sailing on his boat the The Blue Ridge, hunting, biking and generally being in nature.
He is survived by his beloved sons, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, and loyal pup Finley.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Vaike and Arnold, and his brother, Olev.
Although it has been heartbreaking to witness his decline, we are grateful that he was here in New York with us the last few years. We were able to spend meaningful time together and ensure that he received loving care. His adoring grandchildren will have lasting memories of their fun and doting grandfather.
We love you and miss you dearly Dad.
