attempting to reach laid-off Subway restaurant workers

Thu, 12/11/2025 - 2:14pm
In the wake of several Subway locations closing this week in Maine following the revocation of their business registrations, the Maine Department of Labor is attempting to reach affected workers who have lost their employment, according to MDOL, in a news release. The Department also wants to remind anyone who experiences a layoff of the resources available to them.
“The Department is here to assist these workers through this period of uncertainty,” said Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman. “We have resources to assist them with both their immediate needs and long-term goals, and want to make their next steps as simple as possible during this stressful time.”
If laid off, the Department encourages affected workers to do the following:
- Immediately apply for unemployment insurance, which provides partial wage replacement while a person transitions to their next employment opportunity: https://www.maine.gov/unemployment/
- Online 24/7;
- By phone at 1-800-593-7660 Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.-3 p.m.;
- In person at the Augusta, Bangor, Portland, Lewiston, and Presque Isle CareerCenters on Thursdays between 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Claims can be filed
- Attend the next virtual Rapid Response session, which is held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and is open to anyone. Sessions cover unemployment insurance, CareerCenter services, the Maine JobLink, health insurance options, training assistance, etc. Rapid Response information can be found here.
- If owed wages, contact the Bureau of Labor Standards by filling out a complaint form, or calling 207-623-7900
- Connect with the Maine JobLink and the CareerCenter to find new employment that works for you: https://www.myworksourcemaine.gov/
