Maine Department of Labor announces its no-cost trainings for June 2026.

Establishing or Improving Your Safety & Health Committee – June 2, 2026 l 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. SafetyWorks! Training Institute, Department of Labor, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta

Whether starting a new safety and health committee or improving your existing one, this course will provide employers with the key elements to a successful team, safety committee design recommendations, facilitation basics, and common practices of effective safety and health committees. 

Safety & Health Management Systems – June 4, 2026 l 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. SafetyWorks! Training Institute, Department of Labor, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta

Successful safety and health programs are more than just compliance with the OSHA standards. Injuries and illnesses are reduced when employers possess common elements to identify and address safety and health hazards. This course outlines roles and responsibilities, common principles, required functions and programs of a successful safety and health management system. This course prepares organizations who would like to pursue SHARP/ SHAPE. 

Confined Space Rescue Planning – June 16, 2026 l 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  SafetyWorks! Training Institute, Department of Labor, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta

This six-hour classroom presentation will include a review of the rescue requirements found in 1910.146 Permit-required Confined Spaces in Section K, Rescue and Emergency services from 1926.1200, and Confined Spaces in Construction in Section 1211, Rescue. Planning for rescue includes identification and classification of spaces, hazard identification, elimination and control, training and equipment. It also includes site/space-specific procedures (SOPs) and checklists as well as training and exercises. A review of the highlights of Chapter 10, Rescue in NFPA 350, a guide for safe confined-space entry, and of Chapter 5, Confined Space Rescue in NFPA 1670 will also be presented. 

Trenching & Excavation– June 18, 2026 l 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  SafetyWorks! Training Institute, Department of Labor, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta,

This course explains the dangers to employees from trenching and excavation operations, soil classifications, OSHA requirements, and the types of protective systems to prevent cave-ins. You will also learn what is meant by "competent person". 

Safety and the Supervisor – June 23, 2026 l 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.   SafetyWorks! Training Institute, Department of Labor, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta

The success of any safety program is dependent on your front-line supervisors. Do they have the technical and interpersonal skills it takes to move your safety program in a positive direction? This training discusses the interpersonal skills all supervisors should develop to create a positive safety culture. In addition, the course will outline the key tasks supervisors should be performing daily to identify hazards and keep their employees safe. 

Scaffolding & Fall Protection – June 24,  2026 l 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. SafetyWorks! Training Institute, Department of Labor, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta

Falls are one of the leading causes of death and injury in the workplace. This course provides the construction and general industry standards that regulate walking-working surfaces, including scaffolding, and the fall protection control measures that are available to protect your employees.OSHA Recordkeeping  – June 25, 2026, 2026 l 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.   Sanford Adult Education, 668 Main Street, Sanford

This class provides thorough and comprehensive six-hour training for both new and experienced safety and human resources personnel. You will learn the OSHA rule (29 CFR 1904) regarding recording and reporting work-related injuries and illnesses as it applies to your organization, including COVID-19 recordability guidance. This class includes several hands-on activities on how to correctly fill out the required injury reporting forms.
