'Kosti Ruohomaa: A LIFE Behind the Lens' talk in Cushing
Event Date
Sunday, February 22, 2026 - 02:00 pmKevin Johnson, photo archivist for the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, will present "Kosti Ruohomaa: A LIFE Behind the Lens" on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m., at Cushing Public Library. This collaborative community event, co-sponsored by Cushing and Thomaston public libraries, is free and open to the public.
Johnson’s slide show and talk will illuminate the remarkable life and photographs of Kosti Ruohomaa, who grew up in Rockland. While working as a cartoonist for Disney in the 1930s, he discovered his love of photography, according to a Cushing library news release.
"During the age of the photo magazine, Kosti was a rock star in the photography world," said the release.
His photos graced the cover of many major magazines, including Life, Look, and National Geographic, and Maine’s own Down East regularly featured his work. His successful career allowed him to return home to Maine.
Kosti was a storyteller with a camera.
"He captured the spirit and culture of Maine through its people and landscape like few other photographers have ever done," said the release. "Like his friend Andrew Wyeth, Kosti’s depicted Maine and Maine people with clarity and respect."
Photographs of Cushing and neighboring towns will be part of Johnson’s slide show.
