Joan (Arau) Landwehr, obituary
SOMERVILLE — Joan Patricia (Arau) Landwehr, 88, of Somerville, Maine, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Born in Camden, Maine on January 22, 1938, Joan was the daughter of Louis Vincent and Mary Lucille (Leadbetter) Arau. She grew up in Camden and was a 1956 graduate of Camden High School.
Joan went on to become a beautician, then married and raised her five children at Sunshine Farm on Appleton Ridge. She took pride in her large garden, preserving vegetables, making jellies, jams, pickles, pies, applesauce, donuts, and breads. She also enjoyed being outside and hosting barbecues. Joan also had a talent for crocheting afghans, and in her later years kept her hands busy with jigsaw and crossword puzzles and enjoyed going to the weekly auction in Fairfield with her neighbor.
She was predeceased by her parents; her siblings Leo Arau, Basil Arau, Beverly McConkey, and Helen Jones; her son Jeffrey Landwehr; and her grandson Ryan Landwehr.
She is survived by her children, Peter Landwehr, Paul Landwehr, Monica Cleveland, and Nina Hutchins. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and her brother Louis Arau.
A private service will be held at a later date.
