Herring Gut Coastal Science Center launches $50,000 campaign to expand public touch tank
Herring Gut Coastal Science Center has announced a new project to expand and upgrade its public touch tank experience, made possible by a generous grant from the Wyeth Foundation.
According to Herring Gut, in a news release, the grant will fund the creation of a new custom-designed touch tank built by Tenji Inc., along with major improvements to the facility that will allow the center to welcome more visitors and provide enhanced care for marine life from the Gulf of Maine.
To complete the project, the organization has launched a $50,000 community matching campaign to support additional upgrades and renovations.
The improvements will include:
-
A larger, more accessible touch tank designed for visitors of all ages and abilities
-
A new life-support system with expanded filtration and chilling capacity
-
Upgrades to existing horseshoe crab and tilapia tanks
-
New flooring and improvements to plumbing and electrical systems to improve safety and accessibility
“These upgrades will allow us to welcome more visitors and create even more opportunities for hands-on learning,” said staff at Herring Gut Coastal Science Center, in the news release. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone—from young students to lifelong learners—can experience the wonder of the Gulf of Maine up close.”
For more than two decades, Herring Gut Coastal Science Center has connected students and community members with the region’s marine ecosystems and coastal economy through hands-on science programs, field experiences, and public events.
The organization’s impact continues to grow. Last summer alone, more than 2,540 people visited the touch tank and related programs, while over 5,255 participants engaged in Herring Gut programs throughout the year.
"The new touch tank will expand the center’s ability to safely house and interpret more species from the Gulf of Maine while providing better access for guests using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers," said Herring Gut.
"Importantly, the touch tank will remain free and open to the public for walk-in visits, ensuring that families, students, and visitors can continue to explore marine science through direct interaction with local species," said the release.
Community members are invited to help bring the project to life by contributing to the matching campaign.
"Gifts will help unlock the remaining funds needed to complete the upgrades and create a revitalized space for marine exploration and education," said Herring Gut.
